Co-produit par David Gamson, le producteur des premiers albums de Meshell Ndegeocello Plantation Lullabies (1993) et Peace Beyond Passion (1996), Synonym propose une série de collaborations autour de classiques de Bob Dylan, Roberta Flack, The Human League, Dennis Edwards, Temple of the Dog et du duo George Michael/Aretha Franklin “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me” en compagnie de Cynthia Erivo, Cat Power, Robert Glasper, Chaka Khan, Madison Cunningham, Laura Lee (Khruangbin), Emily King, Lizz Wright, Lianne La Havas, Moses Sumney, Brandi Carlile, Anohni, Willow, Bill Callahan et Chris Thile.
