À l’occasion du 45ème anniversaire des label Invictus, Hot Wax et Music Merchant fondés par Edward Holland, Jr. Brian Holland et Lamont Dozier (a.k.a Holland-Dozier-Holland), voici un coffret monstre de 14 CDs retraçant la période post-Motown du plus important trio de songwriters/producteurs de l’histoire de la soul music. Avec 157 singles pour un total de 283 titres dans un luxueux coffret, cette extraordinaire somme de 45-tours enregistrés entre 1969 et 1977 est dominée par les productions Invictus. Entre le funk débridé de la première mouture de Parliament et 8th Day et la soul psychédélique des Chairmen of the Board et de Freda Payne, Holland, Dozier et Holland, encore sous l’influence de Norman Whitfield, établissent un lien entre les dernières années freak de la Motown et le deep-funk des années 1970. Pratiquement aucun déchet à signaler dans les huit premiers disques du coffret, des splendeurs de Ty Hunter (“I Don’t See Me in Your Eyes Anymore”, que les auditeurs de France Inter reconnaitront sans peine), Glass House (“Thanks I Needed That”) aux râles funkadéliques de Ruth Copeland et de l’insensé “Bump Your Lady” de Natural High, sans oublier quelques bizarreries, dont la country-soul électrique des canadiens de Lucifer.

Plus conventionnelles bien qu’hautement recommandables, les faces gravées pour Hot Wax renouent avec les standards du Quality Control Motownien avec Flaming Ember, Laura Lee et 100 Proof. On notera la présence des Politicians et de leur redoutable “Free Your Mind” sur un fracassant CD 11 qui contient également le défenestrant “Sittin’ on a Time Bomb (Waitin’ for the Hurt to Come”) des Honey Cone. Derniers émois avec des tests-pressings et acetates inédits plus trois remixes de choix de Tom Moulton pour Chairmen Of The Board (“Give Me Just A Little More Time”, “You’ve Got Me Dangling On A String” et Freda Payne “Unhooked Generation”). Guide indispensable à cette boxset, un superbe livret riche et détaillé de 80 pages signé Dean Rudland décrit chaque formation présente et raconte les tortueuses péripéties rencontrés par Holland/Dozier/Holland au lendemain de leur éviction par Berry Gordy. Les coups d’arrêts et procès à répétition subis par Invictus, Hot Wax et Music Merchant n’auront jamais entamé l’incroyable productivité de la Creative Corporation (le surnom du trio). la preuve avec ce coffret aussi monumental qu’indispensable.

Video: Maceo Parker Live au North Sea

Le 8 juillet dernier, Maceo Parker refermait l’édition 2012 du North Sea Jazz Festival. Accompagné de son formidable bassiste Rodney Skeet Curtis (ex-Funkadelic), le légendaire saxophoniste a rendu hommage aux membres de Parliament de George Clinton avant de revisiter le “In Time” de Sly & The Family Stone. En grande forme, Maceo s’est ensuite lancé dans un acapella de “Prisoner Of Love” (James Brown) suivi de “Make It Funky” avec Trombone Shorty. Retrouvez sa performance ci-dessous.
